This is the site of Dr. James Calvert. On his site are hundreds of “papers” (articles?) on hundreds of scientific topics, history optics, astronomy, etc. I have read quite a few and I am damn impressed with the guys style, and curiosity.
Check out his paper on vacuum tubes. I learned a hell of a lot from this about a subject I though I know pretty well.

BTW, I live in Ankara (the capital). If i did live in Istanbul, parts would be much easier to get. Actually I have found a source of parts, but what I REALLY need is a good source of decent beer! TUrkey only has one beer and it sucks. Anyone want to send me a good beer I would be most appreciative (then I can homebrew much better!)!

K2ZA’s DX-100 Arrives at SolderSmoke HQ

Today was big day here at SolderSmoke HQ. John, K2ZA, and his lovely wife Erika drove down from New Jersey bringing with them the Heathkit DX-100 that John’s dad (now a silent key) had built years ago. John heard me mention my long yearning to once again own a DX-100 (I’d had one as a kid); he very generously decided to give me his dad’s.

It’s beautiful. And BIG: Shipping weight: Over 100 pounds. This, gentlemen, is the rig that they were talking about when they first started to refer to certain transmitters as “boatanchors.”

After some time on a Variac, I plan on pairing this magnificent transmitter up with a suitable thermionic-based receiver. Maybe the HQ-100. Then I will put it on 75 meter AM and will attempt to establish myself as one of the plate-modulated, big signal anointed, perhaps even attaining “tall ship” status. We can dream…

Getting the DX-100 was great, but even nicer was meeting John and Erica. What nice people they are!

John and I recorded (in both video and audio) a short segment about the DX-100. I will plug the audio into SolderSmoke #131, and will upload the video to the SolderSmoke YouTube page.

Hamfest tips, 12 Volt Tubes and Cigar Box Radios

Enjoyed very much listening to your adventures in the UK – I very much want to visit Faraday’s lab!

When going to the next radio rally/hamfest, can I respectfully suggest the following:

A jacket or waistcoat with lots of pockets, the bigger the better. A backpack with some more bags inside. An idea also would be some kind of lock or restraint so that you could lock a full bag to a post or something out of the way in case you buy something heavy – I usually ask a stall-holder to look after a bag which they are often willing to do after I have made a reasonable purchase from them!

In one of the pockets put a small multimeter with a working ohms range – to test transformers, coils, valve heaters, etc. before purchase.

In another pocket put valve/transistor (or whatever you are interested in) data books or have a handheld thingy (iPhone, etc.) with a working Internet connection where you can look up such things.

In another pocket put a calculator (not needed if you have a handheld thingy) and a small notepad and pen/cil to make notes and work things out and compare prices from competing stalls.

A camera to take pictures of beautiful things you have no money for or intention of buying.

Some personal news:

Currently building a one-valve BC FM receiver – lots of fun. Recently built a MW 2-car-valve superhet which I listen to the World Service on here in Brussels. I build them into Cuban cigar boxes my missus gets free from tobacco shops around the city and in airports.

The fridge broke down and I discovered it was the thermostat and so I decided – foolishly – to spare the money for the replacement part (unemployed) and build one from components I already had in the radio room. Big mistake. I have been fiddling with different resistor values, broken Veroboard tracks and recalcitrant 740 op-amps for weeks now. Managed to freeze an entire bag of perfectly good carrots! I think I am on the tail-end of the prototype development process now and the production model should emerge in a week or so. The missus was initially impressed but now, sadly, not so. C’est la vie.

I experimented with QRSS using a simple PIC-controlled single car-valve crystal-regulated transmitter and a crystal immersed in a large jar of water for temperature stability. I managed to get seen by various grabbers and so am moderately happy. WSPR might be on the boards next, if I can do it with a PIC and a valve…

Good luck with the RC aeroplanes – try and keep the propellor pointed away!

PS Car-valves are designed to operate from 12V only – heater and HT. Great fun for fiddling around with and completely safe – so long as you don’t break them or burn yourself on the glass!

Glowbug Christmas

My “Mate for the Mighty Midget” receiver (with 6U8s)

The Glowbugs’ Christmas

Sitting totally silent and quiet that night
The old HRO shed nary a light.
The Johnson exciter and its homebrew final
Felt cold as leftovers, or seat-cover vinyl,

I drowsed at my workbench feeling tired and weary,
The print in the Handbook looked fuzzy and smeary.
I thought, “I’ll make coffee”, and groaned to my feet
When I heard a loud clatter outside in the street.

What the–? I wondered and turned on the lights
And there I beheld a wondrous sight:
A battered old van heaped high with components
And a grizzled old ham with a bagful of doughnuts.

I noted his callsign– can’t recall it today–
But a patch on the side read “FMLA”.
I opened the door and hollered “Come in!
The coffee pot’s heating, and we’ll sit down and chin!”

He spoke not a word but whistled in Morse
A “GE OM”, and “By golly, I’m hoarse.
Too many contacts, and hot rosin smoke.”
I nodded and poured him a mug of jamoke.

He emptied the doughnuts in a pile on a plate
And explained in a whistle, “I’m running real late.
I’ve new 6L6s and fine 211s, 6146s and good ‘SN7s.
And 866s and 0B2s, type 45s and mil-spec 807s.”

“For the regennie crowd, 201s by the score
And good ol’ type 30s and 19s galore.
I haven’t neglected the passive-parts run
There’s lots of good iron by old Thordarson.”

I nodded and smiled, suppressing a chortle
As he reached in his pack and left me a 304TL.
He whistled, “I’m leaving, the coffee was great,
But I’m overdue in the neighboring state.”

“Keep everyone building the rigs of their choosing
Or we’ll lose the bands that we’re lazy in using.
Transistors or tubes– any project is fine–
Just keep on constructing and sharing on line.”

He leaped to his feet and waved a gloved hand
As he sprang for the door and his rusty old van.
I heard him exclaim as he drove away from me,
“Merry Christmas, you Glowbugs, and to all 73!”

For new readers: the FMLA (Five Meter Liberation Army) appeared in a
series of short stories written by Michael N. Hopkins, AB5L (sk). If you have never
read these, you’re in for a fun evening!

For QRP fans: the numerical references in the poem are for classic
vacuum tubes, several of which operate at QRP levels (whether or not that was the
original builder’s intention) and (mostly) within the amateur bands.

“ELECTRONS ON PARADE” A Film from the Radio Corporation of America

Gee-willikers! This RCA movie is the cat’s pajamas! Really great stuff. The guy who posted it on YouTube said it had been sitting on his shelf for years, apparently just waiting patiently for the broadband Internet.

I hadn’t realized how labor intensive tube production was. Looks like every one of those fire bottles was, to a large extent, put together by hand. The contrast with the way solid state devices are produced is really striking — the tubes seem like the product of artisans. And they somehow just seem to be more homebrew-friendly than modern solid-state devices.

Don’t miss Part 2! Here we see “heroic hams” in action, saving people from serum shortages during floods, etc. Watch the policeman with the Tommy-Gun almost run over the kid on the bicycle. Yikes G-man, that was close!

The date on the film is 1942, and judging by the number of women shown working in the factories it does seem like a wartime film, but I was surprised by how infrequently the tube’s role in the war effort was mentioned.
