Would this Really Be Homebrew?

Hack-A-Day has an interesting post about an FM Broadcast radio project. I took a look. The Github page has the schematics for the hardware. For me, the thing is, there is just not a lot there. It is a bunch of chips. The FM Tuner IC is the heart of the project. With that one you have to dig down to see that it is a digital processing chip:

All of the action — all of the magic of radio — is locked inside those little SMD chips. I suppose if you were skilled enough to write the software or to significantly modify it, you’d get closer to the experience of homebrew radio, but very few of us have those kinds of skills — we just download the software, then struggle to get it into the chips.

And sure, you could struggle to solder those chips to a PC board, but really, why bother when 99% of the components are already inside the chips? You should just buy a board with the chips on them and with the software already loaded. There you have it: the store-bought appliance is really, really close to the supposedly homebrew receiver.

But hey, to each his own. This is a hobby and it is all for fun. I just think I have more fun with old-style, analog, discrete component HDRs. YMMV.

My Kind of Chip: A Homebrew Discrete 555 Timer Built on Wooden Boards (video)

This is really beautiful. Radraksha Vegad (Pargrahi) from India built a discrete component version of the venerable 555 timer chip. He built it on wooden blocks. This leads to the kind of understanding that even Jean Shepherd would have admired. No longer is the 555 a little mysterious black box. No, Pargrahi shows us how it works.

I know we could do something similar with the NE602 or the LM386. But probably not with an Arduino microcontroller or an Si5351. And that says something about understanding and complexity.

A Parachute that Flies Home Autonomously

Too often ham radio bloggers and podcasters tend to focus their efforts on the projects of, well, older guys like us. I think it is a good idea to direct attention toward young innovators, the next generations of people who are working on interesting new projects using new technology.

Yohan Hadji is definitely one of these young innovators. He is 16 years-old and is working to develop a system that would guide the parachutes of descending balloon payloads to designated safe landing areas. Having spent a lot of time chasing the parachutes of Estes rockets, and after having to PERSONALLY guide my own parachute to a safe landing area (sometimes without success), Yohan’s project caught my attention.

An End to the HDR – SDR Conflict? Kevin AA7YQ Combines the Best of Both Worlds

We’ve had some pretty amazing contact with Kevin AA7YQ over the years. Kevin and I originally bonded due to our common experience with parachutes (he was smoke-jumper, I jumped while in the army). Kevin once used a parachute to insulate a QRSS beacon. And one day, while thinking about SolderSmoke during a drive through Montana, Kevin turned on his rig only to hear… ME! He caught one of my infrequent CW contacts. TRGHS.

Now we hear that OM Kevin may be poised to end the HDR-SDR civil war that has for so long been dividing our great podcast. Can Kevin’s new rig heal our wounds and allow us to enjoy the beauty of SDR waterfalls while not forsaking the joy of hardware defined rigs? Kevin will soon launch a blog describing his effort at rig-building. See below for a preview. Stay tuned.

I am currently working on a new rig design. It is a hybrid HDR(Hardware defined)/SDR radio that incorporates some classic superhet design along with some of the more useful features of SDR. I have found that pure SDR is really not that enjoyable for me. I love using GNU radio to mock up and test design concepts, but SDR basically dilutes the “magic” of radio to nothing more than software and touchscreens, stuff we use every day all day. Its not the Ham Radio I grew up with as a kid and was fascinated by. On the other hand, I have always fought temperature drift, large variable capacitors minimal tuning range, and associated with classic VFO and VXO designs. In fact, in 1997, for my senior capstone design in EE at Montana State University, I designed a 20m superhet that used a DDS LO. At the time DDS was cutting edge technology I used an AD7008JP50. I had to beg and plead with ADI to get a couple samples for my design, since they exceeded my self-funded college student project budget. 😊 But that’s another story. SDR has made me grow extremely fond of the waterfall display. I love having the visual “situational awareness” of what is going on in a moderate bandwidth outside of the spot I am tuned to. I also am a big fan of digital filtering and modification-ability that comes with boot-loadable microcontroller designs. So this design includes most of the real highlights of SDR but does not take the fun out of designing, building, and operating a HDR.

Anyhow, this design is a big goal of mine to complete and build in 2021. I am not retired yet so I still have to balance, work, family, and tinkering time, but I am very excited about this project. I have “noodled” this design to the point of what I have achieved full-on “analysis paralysis”. That is, I keep designing and redesigning, optimizing, and figuring to the point where after months of thought, I have nothing to show for it 😊. So my New Years goal for 2021 is to make “good enough” rather than “perfect” design decisions and move forward. I will keep you posted on the design and possibly start a blog so I can get some peer review input from the greater RF Design/Homebrew community on my project. I’ll keep you informed on my progress.

ZL2CTM Charlie Morris on “QSO Today” with Eric Guth 4Z1UG

Eric Guth 4Z1UG had a really nice interview with our friend Charlie Morris ZL2CTM. Charlie shared with Eric a lot of wisdom about how to homebrew radio gear. I especially liked Charlie’s comments on keeping most of his rigs on the wooden prototype boards. He said something important when he talked about the benefits of taking a break from a difficult problem, then coming back to it with a rested and refreshed mind. I noted, however, that he said most of these frustrating problems have to do with software.

I got got several chuckles out of Charlie’s comments on the difficulty of building stable analog LC VFOs (here he seemed to be channeling our good friend Pete Juliano). I chuckled because as I listened I was happily building the analog LC VFO for my Q-31 Quarantine receiver. The centerpiece of this project is a variable capacitor that Pete gave me; Pete took it out of an old Galaxy V transceiver. Believe me guys, no rotary encoder could possibly look as nice or have as much soul as that capacitor from Pete, with all its gears, reduction drives, and anti-backlash mechanisms. It even smells of machine oil. Call me a Luddite, but I will stick with the coils and capacitors.

Introducing Our New Podcast: “WireWrapRap”

Attentive listeners have probably noticed that for some time now the podcast has been drifting in a new direction. Some have been concerned by this change. I myself, as you know, have shared in many of these misgivings. But I have become convinced that it is time for a major change in direction. We’ve been doing this for more than ten years — we are one of the oldest ham radio podcasts. It is time for a change.
A number of people have encouraged me to make to this change. My co-host Pete Juliano N6QW is clearly the main influence. Pete has made me see the errors of my Ludite ways. He taught me that it is time to put away the Dymo tape and get with it with glowing numerals. Whenever I started getting enthused about VXOs or about Permeability Tuned Oscillators using brass screws moving through hand-wound coils, Pete was there to remind me of the beauty, simplicity, and efficiency of Arduino Microcontrollers and Si5351 chips. Paul Darlington M0XPD contributed an element of old world legitimacy to this push for modernity. Tom Hall AK2B was another influence — whenever I was on the verge of quitting, he’d Skype in from the Big Apple and get me back on the digital track. And we can’t forget Farhan over in India – as soon as he started putting Arduinos and Si570s in his Minima, I knew this was really, as the kids say, “a thing.”
So anyway, it is time for a change. I know many of you may find this shocking, so it is probably best for me to just go ahead and say it: We are changing the name of the podcast and we are changing its focus.
n Instead of SolderSmoke, the new name will be “WireWrapRap.” Wire wrap is the solder-less wiring technique often used in computer circuitry. We hope that the “Rap” thing will be especially helpful in attracting young people – especially those Maker Millennials — to the show. And, you know, soldering just seems so 20th century.
n Instead of traditional homebrew radio, the show will be focused on Mini Computers (especially the Raspberry Pi), Software Defined Radio, Digital Signal Processing, Microcontrollers (especially the Arduino), and the use of smart phones in ham radio
n Obviously this implies a move away from minimalist radio and QRP. So yes, we are going maximalist and we are going QRO. And we are getting more involved in contesting (see below).
Now I know what some of you are thinking – that this must be part of our long-standing quest for sponsorship and that this is all about money. But that’s only part of it. Yes, we have secured a lucrative sponsorship arrangement with a company involved in microcontrollers, small computers and smart phones that is focused on the millennial market. But we’re really doing this for the good of our listeners.
Don’t worry, you will find many of your favorite parts of SolderSmoke in the new show. They will be the same, only different. For example, instead of the “Bandsweep” segments that we used to do, now we are going to have “Codesweep” (and it’s not about Morse). Where we used to have SolderSmoke Mailbag, well, don’t worry — we are going to continue to have a segment that will allow for listener input. We going to call it “Pi Hole.” We’ll only be accepting listener input via TEXT messages or Tweets – we are, after all, trying to be modern. Along the same lines, we will be distributing the podcast exclusively via Soundcloud. So get with it gentlemen! Get into the cloud!
In the new and improved podcast we want to explore the new and exciting digital modes. We plan segments on all the new ones: PSK-99, Opera, WSPR, SNICKR, Throb, Thor, Piccolo, Oreo, Oregano, you know, all those weird sounds you’ve been hearing near what used to be considered the CW portion of the band. It will be such fun! I can’t wait to decode some Oregano!
Smart phones, are, of course, the future of ham radio, and we intend to be fully into those little magic boxes. I don’t know if you guys realize it, but all of that ugly dusty junk in your shack can be replaced by a few lines of code from the App Store. That room you used to call “the shack” can be converted into the Yoga studio or knitting room that your wife has been longing for! Now you can carry your station with you wherever you go and autonomously participate in contests from stations around the world. Imagine the thrill of learning that while you were playing golf or bowling, you were also WINNING a major DX contest from a “station” in Ulan Bator. And that ALL of your reports were 59! It’s like owning your own ham radio drone! Congrats old man. YOU WON! Welcome to the 21st century! That’s the kind of operation we are going to explore on WireWrapRap!
For those of you who are worrying that we might be abandoning our microphones, have no fear my friends, Pete and I remain committed phone operators. Only now, it will be DIGITAL VOICE. We’ll be squeezing our dulcet tones into a mere 800 Hz of bandwidth. This way we both sound exactly the same. Heck with this new technology everybody will sounds the same. How cool is that! We’ll all sound like a mix of Stephen Hawking’s synthesizer, Apple’s Siri, and MTV’s Max Headroom. The AM guys and the Enhanced SSB crew may need some time to get used to this, but c’mon fellas, it is time to get with it! There will be no more need to tweak all those menus for “presence” and “brightness” and “mid-range.” Heck no, we’ll all sound the same! Progress my friends, PROGRESS!
As I said, I had my doubts about this. But over the weekend I walked into the TV room and Elisa happened to be watching one of those “inspirational self-help” speakers on Direct TV, and you know what? He made a lot of sense. Change IS good! We have to EMBRACE the future! Impossible = “I’m possible!” Yea! So thank you Deepak Chopra! Thank you Pete Juliano! And welcome — all of you — to the WireWrapRap!

Si5351 and the Spectral Purity Mask

I was thinking about spectral purity standards and the Si5351 chip. I realized that I didn’t even know what the FCC standards for “close in” noise are. The standards for spurious emissions ARE well known, but these are for harmonics and parasitic emissions relatively far from the desired signal. What about unwanted signals CLOSE to the desired signal?

My old 2002 ARRL handbook indicates that the FCC has not established firm standards for this “close in” noise. (They call it “out of band” noise, but are clearly referring to noise that is close to the desired signal but spreading out beyond the desired bandwidth. Phase noise would be in their category.)

In the course of my Googling, I found the above spectral purity mask. I don’t know where it comes from, but I think it is the kind of graph that would be very useful to us as we evaluate the merits and shortcomings of various frequency synthesizers. Would our DDS or PLL rigs fit in this mask? I think an Si5351 rig WOULD. According to KE5FX’s measurements, at a mere 100 Hz from the center frequency, the Si5351 phase noise is already -90 db.

Does anyone have a similar mask showing current standards?

I still don’t understand why so many folks believe that the Si570 is a useful part for homebrew rigs, but the Si5351 is not. Look at the numbers:

Can anyone out there explain the technical basis for the belief that the Si570 is a useful part while the Si5351 is not?

It is important to keep things in perspective. ALL of these noise numbers represent VERY small noise levels. Let’s keep is simple and assume a 100 watt carrier signal and a phase noise of -100 dbc/Hz. That means the phase noise per hertz would be .00000001 watts. That’s watts/hertz. How much “noise power” would that represent in a typical SSB passband? Multiply by 2500 Hz and you get 25 microwatts. That’s really low noise levels. Not enough to worry about. And as we’ve noted, we’ve happily used rigs with LC VFOs and crystal oscillators for all these years without every once measuring their phase noise.

Si5351 Phase Noise? A Tale of 3 Oscillators

There is still a lot of talk about the supposedly horrible phase noise of the Si5351 chip. In a recent episode of a popular (and very good!) podcast about homebrewing, the podcasters talked about this in the context of some megawatt AM shortwave broadcast stations that had oscillator phase noise problems and were wiping out large portions of the HF spectrum. I don’t think those stations were running Si5351s, but the listener was left with the impression that these handy little chips are very noisy with lots of spurs and will inevitably produce horrible dirty, spectrally impure signals.
This has not been our experience. Following Pete’s lead, several of us are using the Si5351 to generate both VFO and BFO signals in our transceivers, with good results. The receivers sound very good and we have not heard complaints of “broad” or “noisy” transmitted signals.
I decided to dig into this a bit. This was also an excuse for me to use the FFT and screen capture features on my Rigol ‘scope.
I now have THREE BITX transceivers in the shack. My BITX17 uses a VXO at round 23 MHz (IF at 5 MHz)/ My BITX20 uses a classic LC VFO running around 3.5 MHz (IF at 11 MHz). Finally, my BITX40 (DIGI-TIA) uses the dreaded and much reviled Si5351 running at around 16 MHz (IF at 9 MHz). I thought that these three rigs would provide a good opportunity to test the scurrilous claims about the Si5351.
As a simple first test, I put my Rigol scope in FFT mode and just put the probe at the VFO Mixer’s LO input. The screenshot above is the FFT for the Si5351. It looks pretty clean to me. The ‘scope is looking at 15 Mhz above and below the VFO signal.

Next I measured the output of the BITX20 VFO at the same point (input to the VFO mixer). (I had to change the vertical range, but the horizontal was unchanged.) Here you can see the second harmonic (just because at this low freq it is within the freq range setting of the ‘scope). It doesn’t look much different than the Si5351.

Finally, here is the BITX17 VXO at 23 MHz, again at the input to the VFO mixer. It looks remarkably similar to the Si5351, don’t you think?
More on this to come. The ARRL Handbook (2002) has a good discussion on phase noise. I am digging into this and hope to do some more tests. For now, I think we should reserve judgment on the utility (for us) of the Si5351.

Two Party Balloons, an Arduino and an Si5351 FLY! ALOFT! UP IN THE AIR!

Farhan alerted me to this. This is clearly the coolest use so far of the Dynamic Duo (Arduino+Si5351).

It took me a moment to get my head around this. It is so fantastic. Let me break it down for you:

You take two party balloons. You build a little payload consisting of an Arduino Nano, an Si5351 board, a GPS module and a battery. You load the Nano with firmware that will take the GPS info and transmit it via WSPR and JT9. Then you release the whole thing and sit back to receive the telemetry packets that tell you where the thing is. Very cool. Very cool indeed.

THE Si5351 SERVES AS THE WHOLE TRANSMITTER. It connects to the antenna. (Steve Smith will, I’m sure, insists on a low pass filter, even here!)

I’ve been interested in balloons for a long time. A few years ago Billy, Maria and I released a party balloon over Northern Virginia with a note requesting that the finder send us an e-mail (It landed about 10 miles away, across the Potomac river, in Washington D.C.). Here is a picture of a paper-mache hot-air balloon that we built and flew near Lavallette, New Jersey (Ocean Beach Unit III) sometime around 1969. Many of the kids in the picture are my cousins:

BITX DIGI-TIA Build Update #7: On The Air!

With lots of encouragement from Pete, I finally got the BITX DIGI-TIA on the air. The first contacts were made yesterday. I have it on 40 meter SSB. The finicky denizens of that audio-conscious band seemed to like the sound of the rig. I was almost reluctant to tell them it is homebrew (no need to stir up trouble!)
The plug in filter arrangement seems to work very well. This will allow me to put this rig on many other bands. All I have to do is build some additional filter boards and upload modified versions of the software. There is even space to make a plug-on socket for the crystal filter (the 9 MHz IF would not be cool for 17 meters).
I’m really pleased with the RF power chain (the original BITX chain). This time I built it all in a straight line along the back of the transceiver with lots of attention to shielding and grounding. There were no instability problems. The amplifiers did not try to be oscillators. I was shocked!
I did have to reduce the gain of the three termination insensitive transmit amplifiers. Using the chart in the 2009 Wes Hayward/Bob Kopski article, with just a few resistors you can set the gain. I had built them with 19.4 db gain each. This turned out to be too much — the slightest amount of audio into the SBL-1 was driving the amplifiers to peak output. So yesterday I changed all three amps to 15 db (I think that was what Farhan had in the original BITX). It only took me about 15 minutes and it seemed to take care of the problem. I am getting 7 or 8 watts out of the IRF-510.
T/R switching is very smooth and quiet using just two small 12V relays.

BITX DIGI-TIA Update #4

Lots of progress over the long weekend. Along the back you can see the three stages of the RF amplifier chain: 2N3904, 2N2218A, IRF510. I intend to add inter-stage shielding, and one long shield between the chain and the rest of the rig. Front and center is the Si5351 board (code by LA3PNA). Mic amp (which gave me a lot of trouble!) is to the right of the Si5351. AF (RX) amp is to the left (2N3904 and LM386). The big board in the center has the three Termination Insensitive Amplifiers (thanks Wes and Bob), the 9 MHz filter (thanks Steve Smith!) and the two SBL-1 mixers (thanks to Pete Juliano for the “mil-pad ” boards). And thanks to Farhan for the overall BITX concept and the TIA suggestion.
In the upper right you will see where the plug-in low-pass filter will plug in (a better picture appears below). I will use a similar plug-in for the band-pass filter. Combined with the BFO/VFO flexibility of the Si5351, this plug in feature should allow me to cover many bands with this rig.
