Yet ANOTHER Homebrew 15-10 SSB Transceiver (Video #1)

A homebrew 15-10 SSB Rig for the Dominican Republic:

This is my second build of this rig.

I am using a 10 pole crystal filter that I built for the first build, but did not use. I am also using the tuning capacitor from a Galaxy V’s oscillator — I like the anti-backlash gears and the reduction drive. This rig is built on a pine board covered with adhesive copper tape. It has been built stage-by-stage on copper-clad boards using the Manhattan construction style.

The structure of the rig is basically that of a BITX rig — the RF and IF amplifiers are Termination Insensitive Amplifiers.

Soon the receiver will be completed. I will then build the stages needed for the transmitter portion of the transceiver.

I will take this rig with me to the Dominican Republic.

David Cowhig was 73 Magazine’s Hambassador on Okinawa — I had the same “position” in the Dominican Republic. David and I were both in the Foreign Service; we joked that 73 had afforded us our only chances to be ambassadors of any kind. My HI7/N2CQR QSL Card

My fellow Vienna Wireless Society Member Ron WA6YOU is a real expert collector of QSL cards. He was rightly critical of a very crude homebrew QSL that I made a while ago. So when I got back from the Dominican Republic I decided I had to clean up my act. Some Googling, some printer ink, and some cardstock later, I came up with the above. I kind of like it — it looks better (believe me!) than my earlier effort, but it retains an element of homebrew (I kind of made it myself).

The picture is of Juanillo Beach, the beach we use when in Cap Cana. This one was filled out for Mike KA4CDN, who was the only Vienna Wireless Society member I contacted from HI7.

I made about 38 contacts from HI7. If anyone out there worked me and wants a card, my printer is at the ready!

As we approach the end of our current stay in the Dominican Republic, I could not miss out on the chance to work Walter with his homebrew rigs. Even though the space weather was stormy, and my dipole was droopy, we arranged to meet up on the high end of the 20 meter CW band this morning. See the results in the video above. A solid QSO with Walter. He says it is HB2HB, but truth be told I was on a uBITX that was built more by Farhan than by me. But this was a great contact. Walter started with a 50W rig, then switched to his 3 watt rig with a DC receiver. FB

Here is the e-mail I received from Walter after the QSO:

Dear Bill:

Many thanks for the great video, and when
you return to Virginia look for your mailman
to bring a postcard from me!
Just after your phone call this morning I scanned
the band from 14.025 to 14.300 and heard only one
SSB QSO at 14.347, and even now I only hear
a half dozen SSB signals, so that makes what
we did even more amazing.
The first photo below is my 3.5 watt NE602 direct conversion
rig which is about 2 years old. The transmit signal is created
by putting a 3 MHz VFO signal into an NE602 mixer with an
11 MHz crystal, so the rig can receive CW and SSB from
14.025 to 14.300 and can transmit CW anywhere in that range
with good frequency stability.
The bottom photo is my new full break-in CW 50W rig which
I just put on the air about a week ago and is still in the finalization stage.
I am not yet happy with it, but then again I am more particular
now than I used to be. It is really a trans-receiver with a single
conversion superhet receiver at the bottom of the board using
an NE602 pair with a 3-crystal 4 MHz 900 Hz bandwidth filter,
and a single 10.080 crystal VFO which is tuned with a polyvaricon
for operating between 14.061 and 14.068 MHz.
At the top is the VXO transmit section using a pair of 14.070
crystals pulled down into the operating range. This signal
is buffered and amplified to about 500 mW which is all that
the MRF101 RF Power Amplifier needs. Visible behind the
board is an AC-powered 24 VDC switching power supply which
is connected in series with the 12 VDC battery to
power the final stage with about 36 VDC. The main 12 VDC is
provided by a bench power supply which is not in the photo.
In both rigs the morse code key is the microswitch
at the lower right corner. (Way more handy and elegant
than your key, I might say?)
This morning each of these rigs was connected to its own
end fed half wave antenna, one in my backyard
and the other on the side of my house. My antenna analyzer
shows them to be essentially equal, but my 50W rig does
not like one of them at all.
Making our international homebrew-to-homebrew contact
today was a terrific ham radio experience, so thanks for all
you do!

Working Vienna Wireless Society member (KA4CDN) from Hispaniola

We’ll be heading back to the States soon and I was feeling guilty about
not having worked anyone from my home club (the Vienna Wireless Society).
On Wednesday night I Zoomed in to the club’s Maker group — this made me want
to make at least one contact with the club. Plus Walter KA4KXX in Orlando has
been trying to set up a sked on 20… This morning I saw that the SFI was up above 200.
I lengthened the dipole so it would resonate on 20 meters (on this trip it started on 20, went to 17, back to 20, down to 10 and now, back to 20!). I worked one station on SSB, then sent a text to the club’s DX spotter group, saying that I would be calling CQ on 14.060 MHz. Soon I got a call from club member (and Maker) Mike KA4CDN. We had a nice QSO. Thanks Mike (video of our QSO above). I will try with Walter tomorrow.

Happy New Year and Straight Key Night from HI7/N2CQR

HNY from HI7! In keeping with SolderSmoke tradition, I recorded the above greeting. If you look over my right shoulder, or in the picture below, you can see the apartment building we will be moving into (at least for the winter months) later this year. There will be a small shack on the top level. And yes, a telescope.
This morning I fired up the uBITX on 20 CW and made two Straight Key Night contacts. My key is the straightest of the straight — a homewbrew thing made from an old hack-saw blade, copper tape, brass screws, scrap wood, and duct tape. Picture below.

Fixing Up An Old Homebrew Rig — Barebones Superhet and VXO 6 Watter

I’m not exactly sure why I pulled this old rig off the shelf, but I’ll write up what I did — I often use this blog as a kind of notebook. I can look back and easily see what I did on my last encounter with the rig.
The receiver is Doug DeMaw’s Barebones (aka Barbados) Superhet. This was my first superhet receiver. I built in in 1997. The transmitter was my first real homebrew project — it is the VXO 6 watter from QRP classics. I built it in the Dominican Republic, probably in 1993 or 1994. I built the power supply so that I could say that the entire rig is homebrew.

This rig is getting a bit long in the tooth: The receiver is built with 40673 Dual-Gate MOSFETs, an some of the transistor cans have gotten rusty. The frequency readout on the receiver is the top of a coffee can fitted onto the reduction drive behind the tuning knob from a Drake 2-B (not MY 2B!).

Here are two 2013 videos that I did on this receiver:

— I put the crystal filter back in CW mode. I had widened it so that I could listen to 20 meter SSB, but I decided to go back to its original configuration. When I built the receiver in 1987, I didn’t characterize the crystals — I just used the capacitor values that Doug DeMaw had in his article. I pretty much did that again this time, just putting caps that are close in value to what Doug had. DeMaw used color burst crystals at 3.579 MHz. So I guess this would be a GREAT receiver for the Color Burst Liberation Army!

— I used My Antuino (thanks Farhan!) to check the passband. Here is what it looks like. I just put the Antuino across the 10k resistors on either side of the input and output transformers. The coil cores had become very loose — I just tried put them in the right place. I may need to put some wax in there to allow them to better stay in place. I think they could have used toroids instead — that would have been easier. One of the transformer connections was open — they don’t work well that way, once I fixed that, the passband looks like this:
— Each of the horizontal divisions is 500 Hz. The passband is not pretty, but it is OK, and I didn’t feel like doing too much work on this to get it in better shape.

— The filter peak was a bit lower in frequency than expected. I found that trimmer cap C3 in series with the BFO crystal would not allow me to lower its frequency sufficiently. So I moved C3 to a position in parallel with the crystal. With this mod, I could get the BFO frequency to 3578.69. This produces a 690 Hz tone when the received signal is at the peak of the IF passband. Opposite sideband rejection is quite good.

March 2013 Rebuild of the VXO 6 watter

— I didn’t have to do any real work on the transmitter. The RF amplifier in the transmitter had served for a time as the RF amp in by 17 meter DSB rig (I had added a bias circuit, which I removed when I put the amplifier back in Class C). Some time ago I rebuilt the oscillator circuit (which had been literally cut off the board when I used the amplifier in the DSB rig).

— I did have to reconfigure the muting circuit — the T/R switch in the transmitter switches the antenna and also — through a two wire circuit — cuts off 12 V DC to the transmitter when in receive mode.

— For sidetone I just put a small piezo buzzer through a 1k resistor between 12 V DC and the key line.

It all worked fine — I talked to three stations on the high end of the 20 meter CW band.

VFOs and Temp stabilization. Dean KK4DAS found my ceramic resonator VFO for DC receiver drifty. He was right. So I built a real LC Colpitts VFO. Got me into temp stabilization. A new hobby! An obsession. HT-37 and Ht-32 parts. Ovens? WU2D’s second VFO video. Understanding thermal drift and how to address it. Split stator caps. Cut and try.

Built a Polyakov DC Receiver. https://soldersmoke.blogspot.com/2010/03/polyakov-plus-dual-band-receiver-with.html Lauser Plus. Lauser = Imp or Young Rascal! DK2RS. He used a ceramic Resonator VXO at 3.58 MHz. Mine works great on 40 with VFO running 3.5 — 3.65 MHz. See schematic below.

On 40 AM with DX-100 and MMMRX. DX-100 died. 12BY7 VFO buffer went bad. How common is failure in this tube type? Nice QSO with Tim WA1HLR about the DX-100.

Got my Dominican license: HI7/N2CQR! SSSS on the way. Thanks to Radio Club Dominicano and INDOTEL.

Troubleshooting and Fixing Old Faults in my Long-Suffering Hammarlund HQ-100 (Part 2) (video)

Work continues on my old Hammarlund HQ-100. I give background on the rig and explain the electrical trauma it likely suffered. Following Dave K8WPE’s dictum that we can still learn a lot from old receivers, I dug into this one. I wanted to fix a long-standing S-Meter/AVC problem. This led me to an interesting troubleshoot, with at least one “waste of time” detour. Eventually I found the fault in one of the coils in the grid circuit of the RF amplifier. The coils had been smoked years ago, perhaps by a lightning strike. I came perilously close to permanently losing 10-30 MHz. But I figured out how to fix the smoked coil. So my S-Meter/AVC problem was fixed. I really like listening to this thing. There is still a lot of nice material on the SW bands. There are some very nice broadcasts in Spanish. You can see where the coil burned. Wire remained intact, but the insulation burned creating a Primary to Secondary connection.
I just very carefully lifted one of the coils way from the other, eliminating the unwanted connection.
Here’s my homebrew “RC Printed Network” Z2 module. This was unnecessary — the original was good. I put the original back in.

This video reminded me of the people in Santo Domingo 25 years ago who rewound the transformers and RF chokes from my HT-37. These parts still work.

Chuck KF8TI recently told me that when he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines (1965-1967) he visited a transformer re-winding shop there, seeing piles of insulation and wire on the floor. Apparently business was good!
