cursor: pointer;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1316820873_0\">Uniontown<\/span> and met via CB \u2013 which was a gateway drug to Ham Radio for many of us.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>Within a fairly short time, we became good friends.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>Although I moved away some 30 years ago, I always try to get together with him when I\u2019m back in town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv796515345MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The HW-7 references also reminded me of trips into the nearby hills (being a few years older, I had my driver\u2019s license and car before him) with his HW-7 and some lantern batteries.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>We\u2019d park my \u201969 Chevy Nova and then hike the trails to find some suitable trees for antenna supports.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>Bert\u2019s code speed was impressive right from the start and he\u2019d work more stations than me, in rapid succession.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>(How many 25+ WPM Novices do you know?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv796515345MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Later, I\u2019d get a HW-7 (and TenTec Power Mite 2) for those hikes alone, but it wasn\u2019t quite the same as doing it with a friend.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>These days, I go to parks in the relatively flat South Jersey or <span style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1316820873_1\">Delaware<\/span> with a FT-817ND, MFJ-9030 or 20M VXO\u2019d RockMite and <span style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1316820873_2\">TX<\/span> Topper Amp.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>Recently, pangs of nostalgia for my HW-7 (and ARC-5 station, for that matter) have arisen.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>I know the receiver doesn\u2019t stack up against the new stuff I have, but it was certainly good enough for many enjoyable contacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv796515345MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Also, John Zaruba, K2ZA, is a good friend of mine here in Gloucester County.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>I\u2019ve laid hands on the DX-100 you now have.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>You should have seen the Collins A line John\u2019s dad had in the racks.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>Everything looked almost factory new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv796515345MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">At our GCARC Hamfest over the weekend, John helped feed my tube addiction with 4 boxes of NOS tubes, shields, etc.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>I also bought his dad\u2019s Meissner Signal Shifter.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>After giving it a respectful time to warm up and colorfully glow again (orange, purple and green from the \u201cmagic eye\u201d), I attached it to a tungsten lamp \u2013 the \u201cmanly\u201d way to tune a tube transmitter \u2013 and got RF!<span style=\"\"> <\/span>As it has a balanced 300 ohm output, I have to build a 6:1 balun and hope to have it on the air next week with its characteristic chirp.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>Hmm, just like the HW-7 and my ARC-5\u2019s of years gone by\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv796515345MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">I hope you and your family are enjoying life back in DC.<span style=\"\"> <\/span>It\u2019s not the milieu of <span style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136);
