I am trying to maintain a good attitude and not turn into a grumbling techno-Neanderthal here&#8230; But it is really different. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Very apropos of my current struggles, some work done by our friend Mike, KL7R, came across my screen this week. It was about his effort to deal with the REALLY TINY SMT ICs. I couldn&#8217;t help think about the old Easy-Bake oven that my sisters played with: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Hi Bill,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I&#8217;ve been doing some surface mount projects over the last couple of years and found one method of soldering that I really like: my <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1261241776_0\">toaster oven<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">. I use Kester Easy Profile <\/span><span style=\"border-bottom: 1px dashed rgb(0, 102, 204); background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; cursor: pointer; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1261241776_1\">solder paste<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> which I get in a syringe from KD5SSJ for $5:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kd5ssj.com\/index.php?option=com_content&#038;view=article&#038;id=120&#038;Itemid=54\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1261241776_2\">http:\/\/www.kd5ssj.com\/index.php?option=com_content&#038;view=article&#038;id=120&#038;Itemid=54<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The syringe allows you to put a little dab of solder on the board where each SMT component goes. I use my forceps to place the components, and the paste holds them in place. You can even invert the board and they won&#8217;t fall off. After the board is populated, you just carefully bake it in a toaster oven. The guys over at Seattle Robotics have a nice description of the baking process:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlerobotics.org\/encoder\/200006\/oven_art.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1261241776_3\">http:\/\/www.seattlerobotics.org\/encoder\/200006\/oven_art.htm<\/span><\/a><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlerobotics.org\/encoder\/200006\/oven_art.htm\"><br \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The first SMT project I did was an ATS3a transceiver, soldering each part in one at a time. It was a real pain. I used the solder paste and baking to put together a Juma1 receiver kit from the Finnish QRP club, and it went like a breeze. I am getting one of these cute digital storage oscilloscope kits ($35, can you believe it?) and will use that method for soldering it.
