Sure enough, Pablo, EA4FUK, reports seeing my shark fin this morning on EA1FAQ&#8217;s grabber. He sent this image:<\/span><\/span><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homebrewradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/N2CQR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 288px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homebrewradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/N2CQR.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573867037122398242\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">A big X-Class flare took place at 0200Z, which was probably just a few hours before Pablo was looking at the FAQ grabber. This pond crossing probably also coincided with gray line time at his location.<\/p>\n<p>Paul, NA5N, puts it all in context (in a message to QRP-L):<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homebrewradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/N2CQR.jpg\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Gang,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">There was an X2 flare about 0200Z 15 FEB (about 2100 EST). This has caused <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">HF radio blackouts on the sunlit side of the sun (not us!). As this <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">subsides, the E\/F layers will be highly ionized for good reflection. This <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">event has already elevated the solar flux to about 113 (average lately about <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">80-85). While this doesn&#8217;t do much for us right now in North America, it <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">could create some very interesting morning gray line propagation if you&#8217;re <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">one of those morning people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The X2 event didn&#8217;t have much density to it, only creating a shock wave of <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">about 550 km\/sec. However, the M6 two days ago had a shock wave of about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1200 km\/sec. &#8211; enough to cause a <\/span><span style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1297767277_0\">geomagnetic storm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> when it is expected to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">arrive <\/span><span style=\"cursor: pointer; background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% transparent; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1297767277_1\">Tuesday morning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">What is important is to keep an eye on the sun for further activity at:<\/span><br \/><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/today.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1297767277_2\">http:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/today.html<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> or other sites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">These active regions are near the center of the sun, meaning any further <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">flares will send shock waves directly at us. The active regions are highly <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">magnetized, meaning they are capable of generating further M or X class <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">flares. If another flare or two happens tomorrow (Tuesday) during daylight <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">hours, it will raise the solar flux and the higher bands will be open for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the duration of daylight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Therefore, the upper bands may be open, but may be interfered with for a few <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">hours if a geomagnetic storm is triggered.
