Altoids are less widely available in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\" title=\"United Kingdom\">Britain<\/a>\u2014their country of origin\u2014than in the regions to which they are exported, the standard peppermint mints being the only flavour available and only stocked in relatively few stores. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Callard_%26_Bowser-Suchard\" title=\"Callard &#038; Bowser-Suchard\">Callard &#038; Bowser-Suchard<\/a> manufacture and produce Altoids at a plant in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bridgend\" title=\"Bridgend\">Bridgend<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wales\" title=\"Wales\">Wales<\/a>, although <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wm._Wrigley_Jr._Company\" title=\"Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company\">Wrigley<\/a>, the brand&#8217;s owner, announced in mid 2005 they planned to move Altoids&#8217; production to an existing plant in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chattanooga,_Tennessee\" title=\"Chattanooga, Tennessee\">Chattanooga, Tennessee<\/a>, in order to manufacture its products closer to where they are sold.<\/p>\n<p>The history of Altoids dates back to the reign of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_III_of_the_United_Kingdom\" title=\"George III of the United Kingdom\">King George III<\/a>. The brand was created by a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" title=\"London\">London<\/a>-based Smith &#038; Company in the 1780s but eventually became part of the Callard &#038; Bowser company in the 1800s. Their advertising slogan has been &#8220;The Original Celebrated Curiously Strong (insert flavour here) Mints&#8221; for a number of years, referring to the high concentration of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peppermint_oil\" title=\"Peppermint oil\" class=\"mw-redirect\">peppermint oil<\/a> used in the original flavour lozenge. The &#8220;Story of <b>Altoids<\/b>&#8221; text is printed on the paper liner inside certain tins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>One cautionary note: Apparently Altoids mints played a minor role in the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky mess.
