That&#8217;s what Marconi did (above we see his team struggling with a kite at Newfoundland). And that is what AA1TJ, W1REX, AA1MY and W1PID are doing today and tomorrow. Here is Michael&#8217;s message to QRP-L describing the expedition. Good luck guys! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">Some of the lads are heading over to the Maine seacoast on Monday<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">morning for what we&#8217;re calling a &#8220;Rexpedition.&#8221; W1REX was kind enough<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">to secure the use of his family&#8217;s beachfront camp for us for a couple<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">of days. He explained the urgency to them, saying, &#8220;&#8230;a bunch of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">radio-heads want to talk to <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1257744084_0\">Europe<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\"> with the equivalent of a cellphone<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">with a dead battery.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">Rex, Seab, AA1MY and Jim, W1PID, are going to arrive early on Monday<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">to begin putting up the antennas. I plan to show up in time for lunch;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">hopefully after all the hard work is done. Seab wants to erect a pair<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">of half-wave phased verticals on 20m. I think the plan is to lift a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">160m antenna using one of Seab&#8217;s big kites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">Our hope is to cross the pond on both 160m QRP and with my<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">voice-powered 20m transmitter. The weather forecast looks great at<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">least through Tuesday. My &#8220;Code Talker&#8221; will be rockbound on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">14.055MHz; same as last Thursday. We&#8217;ll begin the voice-powered 20m CW<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">attempt the first thing on <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1257744084_1\">Tuesday morning<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\"> (11\/10\/09). Again, the goal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">is to span the Atlantic, but as always, I&#8217;ll be very pleased to work<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">anyone that hears me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">By the way, last Thursday&#8217;s voice-powered operation on 20m was a great<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">success. Altogether, I worked four stations and received one SWL<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">report. The best DX was W4FOA in <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1257744084_2\">Chickamauga, GA<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">; a distance of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">923miles. Tony reported that my 15mW signal was &#8220;an honest 579&#8221;. W4OP<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">&#8211; located one hundred miles to the north of Tony &#8211; handed me the same<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">report and followed up with an amazing recording (you can hear it on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">my website). Later in the day I received an email from AD5VC. Dana<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">reported that he clearly copied my callsign while listening on the LSU<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">club station (K5LSU) in <\/span><span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; cursor: pointer; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1257744084_3\">Baton Rouge<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">; a distance of 1375miles (nearly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">half the distance between the Maine coast and London, England).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">I thought these were remarkable results for 15mW into an endfed wire<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">at 35 feet. It makes next week&#8217;s attempt from a saltwater QTH, coupled<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">with the low-angle of radiation with a spot of directional gain all<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">the more exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">So please keep us in mind come <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1257744084_4\">next Tuesday morning<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;\">.
